Reset Your Faith Nonprofit's Suggested Gift Amounts Before Year-End

A ministry we work with looked at its donation form last week and realized nobody could remember who had set the suggested gift amounts. The three big buttons — $25, $50, $100 — had been sitting there since a 2022 site build. Median gift on the form was $37. The team assumed that was where their donors were. The buttons had actually told the donors where to land.

Preset amounts are one of the quietest levers on a faith nonprofit's giving page. They are not asking the donor what can you give. They are proposing a normal. Every donor who does not tap the "other amount" link takes the proposal. Most donors do not.

The reset is not a headline change. It is forty-five minutes with a spreadsheet.

Pull the last twelve months of gifts, drop the top and bottom 5%, and look at where the middle of your one-time donors actually lives. If the median gift is $58 and your buttons read $25 / $50 / $100, the middle button is right and the low and high anchors are the problem. Move the low button up to the number you are not embarrassed to have offered — for most faith nonprofits in 2026 that is $35 or $40 — and stretch the high button to a number that reads generous but not unreachable, usually around 2.5x the median. The middle stays honest.

For recurring giving, the arithmetic is different. The buttons should be roughly one-third of the one-time set, because a donor is deciding whether $20 a month for a year is something they can carry, not whether they can spare $240 today. If your monthly buttons mirror your one-time buttons, you are asking every recurring donor to make the harder decision, and quietly losing the ones who cannot.

One caveat worth naming out loud. For donor bases carrying real financial strain right now, do not stretch the low anchor. A $10 or $15 first button is not a failure. It is the door. Faithful stewardship on your end includes making the smallest gift feel welcome, not just the largest.

If you have a year-end campaign going live in October and the suggested amounts on your donation form have not been revisited since your site launched, we help faith nonprofits tune giving pages before the appeal goes out.
