Ask for the Year-End Match in August, Not November

The matching gift is one of the strongest year-end levers a faith-based nonprofit has. A well-placed match can double a donor's impact on the page, lift average gift size, and give a December appeal a genuine reason to feel urgent. And yet most of the ministries we talk to either skip a match entirely or scramble to line one up in mid-November, when everyone is already thinking about turkey.

The fix is boring and effective. Ask now.

August is the right month to have the conversation with the one or two donors most likely to say yes. A board member with capacity. A long-time giving family. A local business owner in your congregation. The ask is small and specific: would they be willing to commit a fixed amount — say, $10,000 or $25,000 — to be used as a 1:1 match during your year-end campaign, ideally announced on GivingTuesday and running through December 31.

Asking in August works for reasons that have nothing to do with fundraising theory. Your potential match donors are not yet buried in end-of-year decisions. Their financial advisors are not booked out. Their inboxes are quieter. A face-to-face coffee or a phone call in the next few weeks lands very differently than a rushed email in the third week of November.

If they say yes, you have earned three things at once. You have a real headline for your December appeals ("Every gift matched, up to $25,000"). You have a live progress meter you can drop onto your donation page, which our clients consistently see nudge conversion. And you have a story to tell about the match donor — always with their permission and often anonymously — that models generosity for everyone else on your list.

If they say no, you still win. You have started a substantive conversation with a major supporter four months before everyone else does, and you have time to ask someone else.

One quiet warning. A match works only if the mechanics on your website can handle it. Before you make the ask, make sure your giving page can show progress toward a goal, that your thank-you email can mention the match by name, and that whoever manages your donor database knows how to tag matched gifts so you can report back honestly in January.

If your year-end donation page and email flow are not ready to carry a match, that is the real August project. We would be glad to help you get the pieces in place before the ask goes out.
